I thought my dislike for cockroaches was bad enough. When I found out we had termites, I was really grossed out. They were actually eating the floor framing away right next to my desk in my office at home. They do not make any noise you can hear. My dog knew they were there. She would paw at the floor and whine at me. I could not figure out what was going on with her. I ended up calling termite control in New York City. The reason is because one day in the basement I looked up at the ceiling area that was the floor right under my desk and saw a couple holes in a floor joist. I pushed at it with my finger and it crumbled into dust. The termites were feasting on the floor.
The floor was severely damaged and you could not even tell by giving it a cursory look. If it was not for the interest my dog had in the floor and me seeing those couple of tiny holes in the wood, I would not have known until my desk wet through the floor. It did not feel weak when I walked on it. The carpeting always had a thick pad, and I thought that was what I was feeling under my feet. A large section of the floor had to be replaced after the pest control experts rid the house of the termites.
Termites are great at eating away the middle parts of wood and leaving a thin layer on the outside intact. Unless you know what to look for, you might miss them even being there. And they can eat a lot of wood each day. I think I heard on TV that they can eat about five feet of wood per day! Fortunately, their path as through the floor. The wall framing had no damage whatsoever.
